Artistic Expression

In addition to her work as a Clinical Psychotherapist and Academic Tutor, Carleen is an artist. She recently exhibited her project "The Pink Stink" in 2023 at the prestigious New Art Exchange, Nottingham, which invited attendees to engage with her experiences of internalised racism through experiential art. Art allows Carleen to explore and understand the complexities of the human experience, which is often explored in her therapeutic practice.

"Understanding and knowing how racism can be internalised (IR) is an intrinsic aspect of racism, which we need to be aware of.  Therefore, having an in-depth understanding of the power non-human actors/objects play in the role of racism and IR, can help us to recognise the complex ways in which racism manifests within individuals and communities, enabling us to challenge and address its harmful effects. It helps us to foster empathy, promote self-love, and work towards dismantling oppressive systems by supporting the healing and empowerment of those impacted by IR"

Incorporating objects, art, and creativity in therapy is crucial for clinical practitioners as it provides non-verbal avenues for expression, especially for clients who struggle with articulating their feelings. Creative methods can bypass cognitive defenses, accessing deeper emotions and unconscious thoughts. They foster engagement, reduce anxiety, and enhance self-exploration and insight. Additionally, creative processes can strengthen the therapeutic alliance by making sessions more dynamic and personalised. Overall, using art and objects enriches therapy, making it more holistic and adaptable to diverse client needs, ultimately facilitating healing and growth in a more profound and accessible way.
